Natural Herbal Skincare: Ancient Secrets & DIY Recipes

I used to think "clean beauty" was a modern invention. Then I started researching the history of skincare, and I realized we weren't inventing anything new. We were remembering something very old.

Beauty Through the Ages

Historical Note

Cleopatra bathed in milk and honey—the lactic acid in milk is a genuine exfoliant, and honey is antibacterial and moisturizing. Egyptian women used olive, moringa, and almond oils for moisturizing. They applied aloe vera to soothe sun-damaged skin.

A physician named Galen, working in Rome around 150 AD, created what might be the world's first "cold cream" by combining olive oil, beeswax, and water. His formula was still being sold commercially in the 20th century—nearly 2,000 years of continuous use.

Gentle Lavender Facial Toner

What You'll Need:
  • 1/2 cup witch hazel (alcohol-free for dry skin)
  • 1/4 cup distilled water
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2-3 dried lavender sprigs (optional)
How to Make It:

Combine all ingredients in a clean glass bottle. If using dried lavender, let it infuse for a week before straining. Shake gently before each use. Apply with a cotton pad after cleansing.

Nourishing Face Serum

What You'll Need:
  • 1 ounce jojoba oil
  • 1/2 ounce rosehip seed oil
  • 5 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 5 drops geranium essential oil
How to Make It:

Combine all oils in a dark glass dropper bottle. Roll between your palms to mix. Apply 3-4 drops to clean, slightly damp skin, morning and night.

Important Notes

  • Always patch test new products—even natural ones can cause reactions
  • Use pure essential oils from reputable suppliers
  • Store homemade products in clean containers away from heat and light
  • These products don't contain preservatives—make small batches and use within a few weeks
