Natural Bug Repellent with Essential Oils
Humans have repelled insects for millennia without synthetic chemicals. Discover safe, effective DIY recipes using essential oils.

Our earliest ancestors discovered that certain plants, when crushed and rubbed on skin, provided protection from insects. Different cultures developed different strategies depending on what grew locally—citronella in Southeast Asia, tree resins in South America, pennyroyal in Europe.
The Science: Why Natural Repellents Work
Insects find us through our scent—specifically, the carbon dioxide we exhale and chemicals in our sweat. The active compounds in many essential oils either block insect smell receptors or create a "jamming signal" that confuses them.

Important Safety Considerations
- Always dilute essential oils before skin application
- Perform a patch test before using any new blend
- Citrus oils can cause photosensitivity—avoid sun for 12-18 hours after use
- Natural repellents generally need to be reapplied more frequently than synthetic ones
- For areas with high mosquito-borne disease risk, consult a healthcare provider
