Natural Remedies & Children: A Parent's Safety Guide
Learn how to safely use essential oils and herbs with children. Age-appropriate guidelines, safe dilutions, and gentle recipes for your little ones.

Children are not tiny adults. They have thinner skin (up to 30% thinner), developing livers, smaller body mass, and sensitive respiratory systems. What's gentle for an adult can be too strong for a small, developing system.
Age-Based Guidelines
Newborns to 6 Months:
Avoid all essential oil exposure. Focus on skin-to-skin contact, gentle massage with plain carrier oil, and the healing power of your presence.
6 Months to 2 Years:
Diffusion only (no topical use). Very gentle oils: lavender, Roman chamomile, mandarin. Use only 1-2 drops in the diffuser for short sessions (15-20 minutes).
2 to 6 Years:
Very diluted topical use begins: 0.25-0.5% dilution (1-3 drops per ounce of carrier oil). Safe areas: soles of feet, upper back, chest (avoiding face).
Oils to AVOID with Children Under 10
- Peppermint (can cause breathing difficulties)
- Eucalyptus (respiratory issues in children)
- Rosemary (overstimulating for nervous systems)
- Wintergreen and Birch (contain methyl salicylate)
- "Hot" oils like cinnamon, clove, oregano
"Sweet Dreams" Diffuser Blend (Ages 2+)
What You'll Need:
- 2 drops lavender essential oil
- 1 drop Roman chamomile essential oil
How to Make It:
Add to diffuser 15-30 minutes before bedtime. Turn off the diffuser once child is in bed—continuous diffusion all night isn't necessary.
